Torchwood: The Death of Captain Jack

"Is that the Blessing? It looks like a Giant Arse!!"

The Death of Captain Jack by David Llewellyn

The Death of Captain Jack defies classification in that it is probably the most horny Torchwood material made so far, and yet incomprehensibly is actually rather good unlike any other remotely horny audio. (Another Man's Shoes gets an exception.) Just when I was thinking that after their prior attempts at fixing one of the TV show's biggest stinkers (Day One) with more stinkers (Love Rat, Uncanny Valley) that they should give up trying to make a story like that, well, consider me wrong. Perhaps I'm being unfair, Death of Captain Jack is a lot more than that - it's Torchwood's Turn Left, an absolutely cameo-studded romp through all of Torchwood's continuity, but it's fricked up, and it's also hysterical. When it isn't being horrifying. Or actually surprisingly moving. While it may not be the best Torchwood story, I'd go as far as to say this is the MOST Torchwood story ever written - and it's overseen by James Marsters as John Hart (John Barrowman also gets co-billing but it's really Marsters' show despite the title - it's just out of all of the cameos and important plot bits like Norton Folgate, Queen Victoria and Ianto in a BDSM outfit, he gets the most runtime out of them) Nonetheless, it's just an absolute riot. When it isn't cruelly killing all of your favorite characters because it's an alternate timeline, or adding one of the most terrifyingly brutal Children of Earth connections you can imagine. John Hart has been a bit...I don't know what's the word...he's been a bit Deadpooled. He's essentially Evil Deadpool in a way, and while you'd assume that'd be grating, it does fit with his prior characterization on television. It was more than I was expecting at the very least. Death of Captain Jack, is, well, a lot, but it's also pretty fun - it's an anniversary story that's not an anniversary. Anniversary Squared. 9/10
