Torchwood: Serenity

Serenity by James Moran

Jack and Ianto have always been an extraordinary relationship, not just in that they are gay badass secret agents who are awesome, but also in that the series never realized how important they were.
Even now, much less 2006, you don’t see gay couples doing anything like they did on Torchwood. Sure, they’re occasionally prevalent on sitcoms, and you can find gay romance movies, but to see two such awesome characters together, who’s personalities intersected perfectly was a joy, and like I said, rare in this genre. Much more surprising with how important they both were, the relationship never really got development, it started in We Keep Killing Susie with a “Oh, they’re fucking” and ended, as too many of these do, with one of them dead. It was almost a wrong move to do that. And I’m not just saying that because of the killing their gays trope, which is terrible, yes, but it was the wrong move for the series in general. Children of Earth is perfect - but it also leaves Miracle Day and onwards stories in a bit of a kerfuffle. Serenity is another Torchwood story that's sort of a fix-it for that, the central point of the plot is indeed, Jack and Ianto's relationship, and that's really what the story is basically about in it's entirety. There isn't much of a plot, there's Jack and Ianto in a neighborhood, living the blissful life of suburbia, and oh yeah, some aliens. Serenity has some good ideas about the pettiness of suburbia, combined with an original Torchwood creation I was happy to see back, and really not expecting to. But it’s a story that's ultimately important because of what it represents to the community than anything, so it's more just... good, really. It's not a masterpiece like Broken, where everything is broody and naturally written to the perfect degree, and anyone who says that is just saying that because they're so attatched to these characters. It’s definitely fluff, but you don’t really get gay fluff outside of fanfiction.net and honestly, it’s important. Even if one of them is dead, and not coming back, it’s important, and even if there’s not much I want to say about it, I have to applaud Serenity for doing that. Serenity is enjoyable, high tier character content, and It has something to say, which is more than quite a few stories, no matter how good they are, can say to themself. It's got a point in existing as a random one hour joy, and you know, that's rather nice, really. 8/10
