The One Doctor
The One Doctor By Gareth Roberts and Clayton Hickman
This may be the most difficult review I will ever write, as reviewing comedy is quite difficult, as you can’t use much more substance than “oh, that bit was funny.” That being said, The One Doctor is hysterical. Absolutely Hysterical. Laugh out loud funny, and one of the highest quality sixth doctor scripts. Period.
The One Doctor has two of the most well developed single story characters big Finish has done, with Banto Zane and Sally Anne Stubbins. They put a large amount of fun into the story, that’s what this story is: fun. We need more fun in our lives. This story is where I got the title for the sixth doctors section in these reviews. If that’s not a ringing endorsement I don’t know what is.
Entitled to Melodrama: The Sixth Doctor is what win is made of. I don’t really need to give you much more, as if you’ve listened to Big Finish, you know that Colin Baker’s Doctor is absolutely stellar. His indignant and pompous character is just beautiful, and The One Doctor is a shining example of that. Praise him.
The Goody Two Shoes Act: Mel might be the most hated television companion, right next to Adric. Good thing they gave her this and The Fires Of Vulcan, as all it takes is two fantastic stories to redeem a character. Maybe even one. This story certainly does, as Mel is absolutely amazing, and one of the funniest aspects of the story in general. Not only that, her character section name is also from this story. Mel is undeniably wholesome, and the extra at the end of the disc shows her and the Doctor sitting down for a Christmas meal. Who needs the New Who Christmas specials when you have this and Chimes Of Midnight?
The Monsters: They vary in this story, but I’d like to give special credit to the Spraxis Gelloids, who are basically Eeyore but a Doctor Who monster, and the assembler robots who are such blatant Dalek ripoffs it’s hilarious. The shelves of infinity are a special touch, and the assemblers overall had me in stitches.
Overall: This glorious send up of Doctor Who is everything you want in an audio drama. One of Big Finishes Crowning Achievements. 10/10
