Bloodtide

The rare Silurian story that isn't a remake

Bloodtide by Jonathan Morris

Not sure if this is old Jonny's first play or not, but it's certainly an incredibly early outing, and it's frankly rather phenomenal in every way, and the more I think of it the more I struggle to come up with any flaws. Which is the usual thing with Six and Evelyn. Okay, yes, this predates Who and The Pirates, but I'm starting to think 6/Evelyn on boats is my aesthetic. BECAUSE MY GOD, it is comfy. It is fun. It is so so fun. and It involves skinned humans on meat racks. Which is very fun in that it made me literally start freaking out after an audio that is mostly like "um, okay, here's a classic who serial" and then drops skinned humans on a meat rack on you. Which is like. A Choice.
All the same, it's rare I see a TARDIS team written with such skill, the adorableness factor of Six and Evelyn on the beach, fangirl/boying over a turtle, both meeting Charles Darwin and being like "Oh My Gosh It's Charles Darwin" and accidentally uncovering an reptillian conspiracy is very fun.
Perhaps the go to fun audio. Definitely the go to fun audio that has a human meat rack.
Entitled To Melodrama: The more I write reviews, the more I have trouble with the Doctor section, because if the Doctor is characterized correctly there is very little to say aside from "mm yes, he's very good" and moving on. So, Mm, yes, Colin Baker is very good.
Evil Evelyn, Pirate Queen: Okay, so I love everything Evelyn does. Ever. This may be one of her best showcases, it's rare I feel so happy as when I'm listening to Evelyn, and her fangirling over Charles Darwin and giving him Cocoa makes me very pleased, yes thank you
The Monsters: The Silurians are great here, and it's my personal vote for best Silurian story because:
1. It is not the story utilized over and over again in every televised story
2. Okay, to clarify, the original Doctor Who and The Silurians is too long, and the eleventh doctor remake, Hungry Earth is boring in that it's literally the same thing, line for line, but mediocrely faster
3. It's creative in it's utilization of the Silurians, using a renegade faction with different goals
4. It references their fascinating origin by pitting them against Charles Darwin
5. It is not warriors of the deep (although it has an equally iconic Myrka appearance)
Overall: There are certain audios it is difficult to remain objective about based around the amount of fun that one has listening to said audio. Bloodtide is one of them, a rightfully said Classic. I enjoy Bloodtide a little too much, and it's similar to a movie like Tomorrow Never Dies or Ant-Man in that you know it's not the best story ever, but you still pop it in more than several other movies/stories simply because it's comfortable entertainment, although not cerebral it is perfectly flawless when you're in the mood to have fun. 9/10
