Shield of The Jotunn

Shield of The Jotunn by Ian Edginton

There are 200 Main Range stories at this point, and as a result (it's the same in any who series,) quite a few of them will be generic, tried before ideas of which don't really stand out that much in one's mind. Of course, there are equal Masterpieces in Big Finishes ranges, but hey, you can't win awards for all of them! There are plenty of stories in Sci-Fi about religious deities being real, much less Norse ones, and there are plenty of four parters like this without much urgency, that fall into the patter of The Doctor arrives, everyone doesn't trust him, the monster reveals itself, cliffhanger, the Doctor and companion separate, , run around, guest development, plot, cliffhanger, run around, guest development, plot, cliffhanger, resolution, explanation of loose ends. THE END! You get a lot of those, and yeah, Jotunn simply makes me think that, well, unless you're a huge huge fan of Constance so far, and haven't heard too many of these, there's not much to write home about. Or write about for that matter. This review is especially difficult, because there isn't much to say. Shield of The Jotunn is especially insignificant, as it directly correlates to two early early stories in Big Finish productions, the Land of The Dead, and Winter of The Adept. It doesn't have the atmosphere of Adept, which is something it desperately needed, so frankly, it's just a worse Adept with Constance in it.
I won't insult it by saying it's as bad as Land of The Dead though, the accents in that one are atrocious.
Anyway, like I said, the good aspects of it do keep it up. Big Finish are wonderful as usual with historical companions like Constance, and I love her character, and her interactions at this point. She is a well developed character that I care about, far from her unimpressive first appearance, she does more carrying of this material than Baker!
The best bits of Jotunn are the few bits of atmosphere (I mean, I don't want them to copy Winter of The Adept, but you could maybe learn a bit from it here) as well as Constance's relationship with the professor of the week, having real nice Constance development conversations with her.
I sound far too harsh on this one, as I actually rather enjoyed it. But if you can't think of much to talk about in a review, I'm not rating it highly. 6.5/10
