The Light At The End
As a bit of a side tangent, why does this unfinished cover look better than the final copy? |
The Light At The End by Nicholas Briggs
The Light at The End is one of the few stories that defies rating to me, because the well, from the fanboy perspective, it's absolutely marvelous, and hearing these voices interact is something that once you delve into Big Finish for a while, becomes positively common sense. On the other end of the spectrum, it's a simple plot hashed together that has the opposite problems of Zagreus- Not enough time, too simplistic a plot, and not as organic a way to fit in the characters. As such, I pretty much definitely prefer Zagreus's manic inanity to the simplistically plotted The Light At The End. No, I don't need to defend myself, it's just that Zagreus is bouncing around with ideas, and Light at The End takes a "these characters now get to interact" approach, and while it's character is excellent, it does end up feeling overstuffed. It's a bombastic bit of event, that I'm not sure pans out. And yet, Leela and Charley meeting! All Eight Doctors and almost every companion! Geoffrey Beevers as The Master! Ace giving all the Doctors nicknames!. I can't give The Light At The End a much higher than average score, and yet, let it be noted that as a fan it is absolutely worth your time, far more than even some higher rated stories. I often struggle to decide whether this blogs reviews are from an enjoyment or a critical perspective, and The Light At The End is the embodiment of that struggle. If I could change Light At The End, it would be make it Three Hours, add more plot so we can have something more behind these character bits, and perhaps cutting some of the more gratuitous cameos, and narrowing it to more a Five Doctors and their Five companions experience. But this isn't my story, and as it is, even if it feels compact, it is really quite good. Just, difficult to describe. 7.5/10
